Cyber Gold Quest

The first flagship initiative under #InnovateInUttarakhand, born from a journey through IndiaSkills cybersecurity competitions.

Every movement has an origin story.

For Cyber Gold Quest, that story did not begin with a medal. It did not begin with a vision document or a carefully planned strategy. It began with two curious youth who had no idea where a simple decision would eventually lead them.

Sometime during the middle of 2023, Ajay Dewari and Lalit Kandpal came across the IndiaSkills Cyber Security competition. At the time, Lalit was pursuing his B.Sc and Ajay his M.Sc. Neither had a background in cybersecurity.

Linux, networking, reverse engineering, digital forensics, cryptography, web application security, and Capture The Flag competitions were subjects they knew little about. Looking at the syllabus, it would have been reasonable to conclude that the competition was not meant for them.

Instead, they decided to try.

The first few months were filled with uncertainty. Every topic seemed to open the door to five more things that needed to be learnt. Some evenings ended with the satisfaction of solving a challenge that had looked impossible a few hours earlier. Many others ended with more questions than answers.

There was no local ecosystem of cybersecurity competitors, no previous medal winners whose experiences could guide them, and no roadmap to follow. Every step forward had to be earned.

Something changes when people spend enough time trying to solve difficult problems. What once appears impossible slowly becomes understandable.

When the IndiaSkills 2024 competition cycle began, Lalit and Ajay travelled with modest expectations. Winning the State Gold Medal came as a surprise. It earned them the opportunity to represent Uttarakhand at the IndiaSkills National Competition in New Delhi.

The national competition was different. They found themselves surrounded by competitors who had spent years preparing, supported by mature ecosystems, experienced mentors, and institutions that had already built a culture around technical excellence.

They returned without standing on the podium.

At the time, it felt disappointing. Looking back, it may have been the most valuable part of the journey. Failure removed illusions. It showed where the gaps were, but it also showed what was possible.

Preparation for the next cycle began almost immediately. Learning became more disciplined. Practice became more structured. Every weakness exposed during the previous competition became an opportunity for improvement rather than a source of frustration.

When the IndiaSkills 2026 competition cycle began in 2025, they were no longer simply participating. They were competing with purpose.

They once again secured the State Gold Medal, then won the North Region Gold Medal in Cyber Security. That victory secured their place at the IndiaSkills National Finals held in 2026.

There, after nearly three years of learning, practising, failing, improving, and trying again, they stood on the national podium as Bronze Medalists.

The bronze medal was a proud moment. But by then something much bigger had already become clear.

The real story was never about two students winning medals. It was about discovering that world-class cybersecurity talent could emerge from Uttarakhand.

That realization became Cyber Gold Quest.

At first glance, Cyber Gold Quest appears to be a mission to win an international cybersecurity gold medal. It is. But only in the same way that a mountain summit is the goal of an expedition. The summit gives direction. The journey transforms the people climbing it.

Only one person may eventually stand at the top of an international podium. Hundreds can acquire world-class technical capability while trying to get there. Thousands more can begin believing that such a journey is possible.
